Independent publisher Telltale Games recently announced “Tales from the Borderlands,” an all-new series based on the popular role-playing first-person shooters “Borderlands” and “Borderlands 2.” The announcement was made at the 2013 VGX Awards, which were streamed online on Dec. 7. Telltale is the creator of “The Walking Dead” game series and the upcoming “Game of Thrones.”

Gearbox Software, which developed the first two installments in the series, will serve as only a collaborator in game's creation. CEO Randy Pitchford felt that Gearbox had provided the “keys to the kingdom” and that Telltale was ready to develop the episodic series on its own.

“Borderlands," which launched in 2009 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, was well-liked by fans and received favorable reviews from web sites like IGN.com, where it received an 8.8/10 rating. The series' second installment was released in 2012 and was also praised by critics.

“Tales from the Borderlands” will feature all new characters – although players will come across regular characters from the series. The game will launch in 2014, although an exact date hasn’t been released yet.

Will you play "Tales from the Borderland?" Should Gearbox Software play more of a "hands-on" role in the upcoming title?
