New York City has experienced what is believed to be an earthquake, rattling the city just before 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The center of the earthquake appears to be in Virginia, near the Washington, D.C. border.

KENS 5 TV reports that the Pentagon is being evacuated, and attempts to call multiple Virginia-area phone numbers from IBTimes offices have been met with error messages. Text messages do not appear to be sending successfully.

A Fire Command Station announcement reported a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Virginia that is being felt as far north as upstate New York.

IBTimes will continue to update the story.
