Updated as of 4:52 p.m. EDT: Richard Matt, one of two escaped convicts from the New York Clinton Correctional Facility, was shot and killed Friday by law enforcement, two sources familiar with the situation told the New York Times. Several other news organizations are also reporting that Matt is dead. The other fugitive was reportedly still on the run.

Original story: One of the two escapees from a New York prison was shot Friday afternoon, according to news reports. Richard Matt was reportedly wounded by law enforcement outside Malone, New York, the Buffalo News reported. The other escaped convict, David Sweat, was reportedly still on the loose.

The two fugitives escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility three weeks ago, and the manhunt has cost a reported $1 million a day. Law enforcement initially believed that the murderers were headed to Canada. Matt and David Sweat, who is still running from law enforcement, were helped by at least two employees of the prison to escape. They reportedly used several types of tools, including a blade that was smuggled to them in frozen meat.

The condition of Matt has not been verified.
