In an effort to combat falling advertising revenue, News Corp executives have been proposing the formation of a consortium with other publishers to charge for news distributed on the Internet and on portable devices, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website.

The success of the Wall Street Journal Online has spurred News Corp's chief digital officer Jonathan Miller to position the company as the leader in a proposed consortium, according to the paper.

Miller has met executives from New York Times Co, Washington Post Co , Hearst Corp, and Tribune Co, the LA Times said.

News Corp could not be immediately reached for comment by Reuters.
