Nexus 5 spotted at Android 4.4 Kit Kat unveiling? Droid Life

Following an interesting sighting at the Android 4.4 KitKat statue unveiling at Google’s Mountain View, Calif. campus, the Nexus 5 appears to have surfaced again -- this time in an FCC filing.

According to Engadget, a device with the model number LG-D820 has shown up at the Federal Communications Commission donning a shape and back panel similar to the device that was seen being handled by Google employees on Tuesday.

The FCC images show off the inside of the LG-D820 back panel where we see a Qi-powered wireless charging coil and a NFC antenna. We also see the large camera sensor, again, similar to the one seen on the supposed Nexus 5, which was spotted that the Android KitKat unveiling.

Additional FCC documentation indicates that the LG-D820 “Nexus 5” will support seven bands of 4G LTE connectivity. Seeing as a lack of LTE connectivity was a major criticism of the Nexus 4, many will be pleased if the Nexus 5 does include such an extensive collection of LTE bands. The LG-D820 also includes CDMA / EVDO rev A, pentaband DC-HSPA+ and quadband GSM / EDGE, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and dual-band 802.11 b/g/n/ac, which indicates all inclusive connectivity for the LG-D820 “Nexus 5.”

Observers have discovered other information tidbits, which indicate other specs for the LG-D820. The FCC filing lists the device as running firmware M8974A, which many believe points to it running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The software version is listed as "aosp_hammerhead-userdebugKyeLimePieFACTORYeng.sangjoon84.lee.20130618.015154," which concerns many for two reasons: It indicates the software version as “KyeLimePie,” which is notably spelled incorrectly and is also not the name of Google’s upcoming operating system.

The public recently learned that the next Google OS will be called Android 4.4 KitKat instead of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. However, John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships told the BBC that the name “KitKat” had been decided upon since November 2012, but Google continued to refer to the system as “Key Lime Pie” among developers and within internal documents in order to keep the true name a secret. This could account for why the software version is listed as Key Lime Pie; why it is misspelled; however, remains a mystery.

Pundits have also deciphered from FCC documents that the LG-D820 will feature a 4.96-inch display with 131.9mm by 68.2mm dimensions and will also contain a 2,300mAh battery.

Similar to the LG made Nexus 4, which was based on the LG Optimus G, many expect that the Nexus 5 will also be made by LG and will be based on the soon-to-be released LG G2. Some believe the device in the Android KitKat unveiling video, which was quickly shared and deleted by Google, favors the LG G2. However, we note that the device in the video and subsequent screen captures, appears to be larger than the Nexus 4, while the display size and dimensions for the LG-D820 “Nexus 5” indicate a smaller device.

Of course, none of these claims can yet be confirmed, but with Android KitKat announced, we expect to see even more information on the next Nexus smartphone circulate soon. Both the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat operating system are expected to be released in October
