Days before Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter was accused of rape by the Melissa Schuman, a singer of the girl band Dream, his wife, Lauren Kitt, retweeted a post on her social media page that reiterated the importance of fact-checking sexual harassment allegations before jumping onto making judgments about the accused.

On Nov. 19, Kitt retweeted a post from actor Michael Rapaport. It said: “I 500 percent don’t support sexual harassment & I 500 percent don’t support unproven sexual harassment. People taking sides sight unseen. Scarlet lettering M------------. Taking sides about accusations by people they will never make eye contact with or look up & fact check. GTFOH.”

Carter proposed to Kitt with a seven-carat diamond ring in February 2013, and they got married April 12, 2014. In a candid interview with People Magazine last year, Carter revealed why he chose to marry Kitt.

“That’s the No. 1 reason why I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life, because I know she is going to be the perfect mother,” Carter said. “She is going to be the perfect person to help me because I don’t know everything, but I know her intelligence, her just heart, her love and her compassion. These are things that my child is going to need.”However, the couple had to go through a devastating miscarriage before they could welcome their bundle of joy in April 2016 – their son Odin.

According to Kitt’s IMDB page, she has worked as an actress and assistant producer on the 2010 short film “The Pendant.” She also worked as a producer on a number of music videos in 2011, featuring her husband. She portrayed the role of a boot camp instructor in 2013 on the ABC soap opera “One Life to Live” and was the host of a workout regimen called “Kitt Fitt.”

Kitt has not directly addressed the accusations brought against her husband by Schuman. The girl band singer alleged that Carter forcefully took her virginity then both of them were working on a movie together in 2002.

Schuman said that after he had performed oral sex on her, she told him that he “didn’t want to go any further” because she did not want to lose her virginity before marriage. “He didn’t listen,” she said, TIME reported. “He didn’t care. He told me, ‘Don’t worry. I won’t tell anybody.’”

Carter then allegedly forced her to perform oral sex on him and then raped her. “It was done,” she said. “The one thing I had held as a virtue had been ruined. I went limp, turned my head to my left and decided I would just go to sleep now.”

Carter vehemently denied the accusations against him. “I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations,” he said. “Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that, anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally.”

“This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later,” he added. “It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”
