Nicki Minaj’s supposed wardrobe malfunction at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night might have been a hoax, TMZ reported Monday. The “Anaconda” singer apparently rehearsed her opening performance with her dress unzipped on purpose.

Minaj held the same dress together with her hands during a run-through of the routine, sources told the gossip site. It caught an "insider’s" eye because she thought the rapper was wearing a robe originally. The star held her arms around her outfit in a “weird” way to try to “manipulate” the dress and see how much of her body it exposed, the witness said.

But not everyone was convinced the outfit drama was a setup. Another "insider" told Us Weekly Minaj never would have been able to seamlessly transition from her “Anaconda” act to her “Bang Bang” performance with Ariana Grande and Jessie J.

"She could never get into that dress," the insider told the celebrity magazine of the lack of time for a costume change mid-performance. "During the dress rehearsal, she did the number numerous times and could not make it into the dress zipped up even once. I've no idea why she didn't just decide to wear something else. She just didn't have the time to change from one outfit into another; there was no way."

Even though there are rumors the incident was a hoax, Minaj maintains it was a wardrobe malfunction. She took to her Instagram account to tell her 7.8 million followers her version. “God is good,” the 31-year-old rapper wrote early Monday morning. “As long as a nipple didn't come out to play, I'm fine.” She praised her style team: “There’s no greater feeling than having ppl who inspire u and who work passionately and relentlessly to get the job done.”
