The 2011 Nike Mag
1,500 'Back to the Future' sneakers for auctions on eBay until Sept. 18. Nike

Nike is only making 1,500 pairs of its new Back to the Future film inspired Air Mag shoes, but the new freaky, futuristic kicks are red hot.

On Friday and Saturday, Back to the Future and Marty McFly, the movie's lead character who wore the shoes years ago, were trending on Twitter thanks to Nike, which is making the sneakers a reality. Marty McFly's self-lacing Nike trainers from the film Back to the Future II have been made available for sale by the shoe and apparel company.

A total of about 1,500 pars of the new Nike Mag shoes are being made and auctioned on eBay. Proceeds of the Marty McFly sneakers are being donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease research. Fox was the star of the Back to the Future films.

The shoes are exact replicas of those worn by the film's leading character, Marty McFly, as he visited the future in the year 2015.

Nike's version of the sneakers, of course, don't lace themselves.

It hasn't gone unnoted by us that there is something special about that shoe and, of course, the movie, Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield said in a release.

Both shoe collectors and Back to the Future fans have urged Nike to make the shoes for years. About eight to ten pairs were used in the movie, and some collectors own them while others remain in Nike's possession.

Nike decided four years ago to make the shoe. The very first pair of the limited-edition replica Marty McFly shoes from the 1989 movie Back to the Future II was sold Thursday night for $37,500. The footwear is sold with a plutonium case.
