A prototype of the Nokia 9 Android smartphone has leaked online along with its full spec sheet. The upcoming high-end handset is expected to be released this year and will directly compete with all current and upcoming flagships.

The prototype of the Nokia 9 was shared online by the French website FrAndroid. The site shared a batch of photos of the handset that appears to be inside a protective case. The site claims that the purpose of the case was to hide the Nokia 9’s full design.

Even with the Nokia 9 prototype inside a bulky case, it still confirms a handful of its hardware features. The front features a physical home button at the bottom of the screen flanked by the typical Android capacitive navigational buttons. On top is the 3.5mm headphone jack, while the bottom is equipped with a USB Type-C port with Quick Charge 3.0 support. Both the volume rocker and power button is located on the right side of the device.

The photos of the prototype once again confirms that the Nokia 9 will have 13-megapixel dual cameras on the back; one with a color sensor and another with a monochrome sensor. Users will be able to shoot in color, monochrome or a combination of both to produce a better image.

The site also provided some samples of the camera’s quality. The photos captured on the Nokia 9’s dual cameras seem a bit underwhelming with its lack of detail and presence of background artifacts. However, this is simply the prototype and the camera software isn’t final yet. The final version of the Nokia 9’s camera software should perform better when it finally debuts, as pointed out by Android Central.

Speaking of camera software, it also looks like the camera app on the Nokia 9 will have a built-in feature that allows users to stream live video directly to Facebook or YouTube. There’s also an option to capture photos with the front and back cameras at the same time to create a picture-in-picture image.

The Nokia 9’s full specification is also seen on one of the leaked photos. The device is listed as having a 5.27-inch display with a WQHD 1440p resolution. The device is said to have an Always On mode suggesting that the display will be an OLED panel.

The Nokia 9 is listed as having an MSM8998 processor which is believed to be the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.46 GHz. The device also has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It’s being speculated that the Nokia 9 might have a 6GB RAM variant.

On the software side of things, the Nokia 9 appears to be running Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The user interface appears to be quite similar to the ones found on Google’s Pixel phones, which suggests that this might be vanilla-flavored (pure) Android, or Nokia is simply using a very lightweight custom UI.

The Nokia 9 hasn’t been officially announced yet, and there’s currently no information on its pricing. It's been suggested that the upcoming Android smartphone will be announced during the second half of 2017.
