Stocks rose at the open on Friday after data showed retail sales rose more than expected last month, supporting optimism the burgeoning economic recovery may be sustainable.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 35.29 points, or 0.34 percent, at 10,441.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 4.28 points, or 0.39 percent, at 1,106.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 10.20 points, or 0.47 percent, at 2,201.06.
