A nude beach near Mazomanie, Wis., will be shut down on weekdays, the Department of Natural Resources in Wisconsin announced Tuesday.

The beach on the Wisconsin River is being shut down on weekdays to thwart beachgoers were reportedly having sex and doing drugs in the woods, the Associated Press reported.

The beach is about 25 miles northwest of Madison and has developed into a hot spot for individuals who want to engage in a little nudity and some illegal activities.

The DNR stated that most of the nefarious behavior takes place during the week when fewer people are around. The supervisor of the DNR in Dane County, Nate Kroeplin, said 83 of the 92 citations given out in 2008 happened on weekdays.

Kroeplin said: “Obviously we’re disappointed when we have to shut any portion of our property down … But our ultimate goal is to have a safe place anybody can feel comfortable using. And with the current activity going on down there, that’s just not the case.”

The beach has turned into a battleground between nudists and conservatives near the Mazomanie area. A 2001 video posted at the Inquistr shows a bunch of a group led by a pastor heckling at people as they walk toward the beach.

Yahoo news reported the beach was never officially made into a nude beach. It was bought by the state in 1949, and since there is a sizeable population of nudists and the county is pretty liberal, it unofficially became a nude hot spot.

But with all the bare skin flooding the beaches, authorities have also had to deal with sex and drugs. Overnight camping was banned in 1990 by the DNR to crack down on questionable activity and in 2012 the nude beach was shut down for weeklong stretches.

Officers issued 19 citations last year for nudists having sex on the beach and another three for people who were using drugs at the nude beach.
