North Korean leader Kim Jong-il died Dec. 18, according to the country's government. Reuters

Kim Jong-Il, the Supreme Leader of North Korea, died Sunday, according to a Tweet sent out just after 10 p.m. EST by the New York Times.

The leader, who was either 69 or 70 years old, depending on which records you look at, had health problems in the years leading up to his death.

His death was announced by the North Korean government. His youngest son, Jong Un, is expected to be his successor.
