President Obama and his family joined many people supporting local businesses during the increasingly popular holiday shopping event “Small Business Saturday” this year. According to the Associated Press, Obama was seen shopping at an independently owned Washington, D.C. bookstore on Saturday, and picked up at least two bags of books.

Accompanied by his daughters, Sasha and Malia, the president browsed the shelves of Washington’s Politics and Prose bookstore, a location that the Obamas have frequented since arriving in Washington. The report stated that Obama was approached by fellow bookstore patrons and was seen holding another shopper’s baby and also engaged in a conversation about closing the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center with another. Obama said that he was working toward eventually closing the Cuban prison.

“Small Business Saturday” is a shopping event that takes place the Saturday following Black Friday, and before Cyber Monday, geared toward supporting independently owned businesses that can’t usually compete with the big sales offered by larger corporate entities elsewhere.
