Oklahoma Boy Run Over By 4th Of July Parade Float Driven By His Father; Bangor, Maine, Man Killed In Collision With Fire Truck

Fourth of July celebrations in Edmond, Okla., about 15 miles north of Oklahoma City, took a tragic turn on Thursday, after a seven-year-old boy was killed when an Independence Day parade float driven by his father ran over him, media reports said.

Police officials said the boy was one of 20 children on the float, and thousands of people had come to take part in the 40th annual 4th of July parade, which is part of the LibertyFest celebration that lasts for a week, NBC News reported.

"Our thoughts today for the family of a 7 yr old boy killed in a float accident at the end of the LibertyFest parade," Edmond police tweeted on Thursday. "Heartbreaking."

The boy, whose identity has not been revealed, either jumped off or fell from the trailer before it ran over him, police officials said. The boy’s father, along with a nurse who was driving behind the float, rushed to the spot and performed CPR on the child.

But, he was later pronounced dead at the UC Presbyterian Hospital, Edmond police spokesperson Jennifer Monroe told NBC News, adding that no foul play is suspected.

In a separate incident, the driver of a tractor in Bangor, Maine, was killed when his vehicle collided with a fire truck, soon after a 4th of July parade was rerouted due to a police standoff with a gunman.

It is not sure if the rerouting caused the accident, NBC News said, adding that the truck driver’s identity has also not been released. Both the vehicles involved in the accident were part of the Bangor-Brewer July Fourth parade.
