A pit bull that was found stabbed multiple times and then stuffed inside a suitcase in Hollywwod, Florida, earlier this week succumbed to his injuries and died Thursday night, Hollywood Police Department said Friday on Twitter.

The plight of the dog, who was named Ollie by his rescuers, drew attention nationwide, and people across the country offered to adopt him

However, Ollie, who was recuperating from his injuries, died around 8:30 p.m. EDT, the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital said in a statement.

"Our team of specialists, emergency doctors and staff worked for over an hour to keep Ollie with us," the hospital wrote. "His body simply could not overcome the inflammation and damage to his body caused by his horrific ordeal."

Officers said they first found the dog and the blue suitcase he had been stuffed into around 1 a.m. EDT on Tuesday after they received a call about the abandoned suitcase at 1945 Lee St. The dog was said to have been bleeding from more than 50 stab wounds to his head and body. He was immediately taken to the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital for treatment, where he underwent multiple surgeries for his wounds till Thursday.

Ollie was believed to be about 2 years old, and was wearing a collar but did not have a tag or chip, according to the police, Miami Herald reported.

"I’m like a sick animal lover," said Kristen Bagarozza. "I just can’t, I can’t fathom how anyone could do that." Kristen and her boyfriend Steve Rogers were the ones who found Ollie and called 911 Tuesday.

"I heard something moving and I looked over and it’s a suitcase, and it looks like a dog is locked in a suitcase," Rogers told the 911 operator. "I’m not one to open the suitcase and get bit. Is there anything you can do?"

They were saddened by the news of his death.

"It’s a miracle the dog even lived this long," Kristen said. "I’m really grateful the dog didn’t have to die in a suitcase, at least it had a bunch of love around it."

Doctors at the animal hospital did their best to save Ollie's life, but the extent of his injuries defeated them

"He had extensive wounds to his head and chest and we were all very hopeful he would pull through, make it," said Dr. Nicole Patterson from the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital. "He did very well with the surgery, but I think yesterday everything set in. The inflammation, the trauma of everything, and he just wasn’t able to make it through, unfortunately," Miami CBS Local reported.

The dog was expected to recover by Thursday afternoon, when doctors had plans to put him through a third surgery in order to help the puppy to recover from his severe head wounds, Linda Ream, the hospital’s communications coordinator said.

But on Thursday evening, the dog’s condition deteriorated rapidly, the hospital said in a statement.

"The outpouring of love we have seen over the last few days in support of Ollie is an affirmation of the true goodness in people," the statement added. "Detectives are still investigating the crimes committed against Ollie in the hopes that the perpetrators of this grotesque brutality will come to justice."

Hollywood police have been investigating the case as an instance of animal cruelty. Anyone with information about the culprits is required to call the Hollywood Police Department’s Detective Bureau at 954-967-4411 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), according to ABC affiliate, Local10.

PETA announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, according to Miami Herald.
