The youngest was 18. The oldest was 50. Their average age was 29.

Officials in Florida released Monday evening the names and ages of the 49 people massacred Sunday morning at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando. Other than an acceptance of the diversity of sexual identity and a shared affinity for late-night clubbing, the backgrounds of the dead are as diverse as the colors of the rainbow flag.

The list of the people struck down by a radicalized New York-born son of Afghan immigrants encompasses churchgoers, student-athletes and travel agents.

The list includes Brenda Lee Marquez McCool, 49, who was out for a late night on the town with her gay son, who survived the shooting. Also on it are Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22, and Christopher Andrew Leinonen, 32, who instead of fulfilling their dreams of marriage will share a funeral. In addition, there are Peter O. Gonzalez-Cruz, 22, a UPS employee originally from South Africa, and Amanda Alvear, 25, a University of South Florida nursing student.

The youngest victim has been identified as Akyra Monet Murray, a student and athlete at a Philadelphia high school celebrating her graduation with a trip to Orlando. The oldest has been ID’d as Franky Jimmy DeJesus Velazquez, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico who worked at Forever 21 in Orlando.

Because it was Latin Night at Pulse, many of the victims were Puerto Rican men — Orlando has become a refuge for islanders fleeing the commonwealth’s dismal economic straits.

Here’s the latest list of the dead as released by Orlando’s city government. For more details about the people massacred by a homophobic man influenced by radical religious extremists half a world away, visit the Orlando Sentinel.
