A number of Illuminati conspiracy theories emerged during the 2013 Academy Awards, and videos explaining some of the occult-related rumors went up on YouTube shortly thereafter.

In recent years, occult-watchers have increasingly spotted supposed references to a New World Order, a secret group called the Illuminati, Freemasonry, Satanism and other shadowy organizations at major entertainment events including the Grammys, the Super Bowl halftime show and more.

And Sunday's Oscars ceremony was yet another major source of fodder for conspiracy theorists, who found a wide range of supposed references to such groups over the course of the night.

The rumors actually began Saturday, a day before the Oscar ceremony, as YouTube user AlienContactee uploaded a video warning "the public that there may be some Illuminati symbolism at the oscars tomorrow and how the Oscars is a celebration of the global elite's brainwashing of the masses."

The clip, called "ILLUMINATI OSCARS 2013" lays out his theory that Hollywood is run by "Illuminati elites," and garnered a slew of comments by his fellow conspiracy theorists. Check out the video below to get an idea of what Illuminati-watchers were looking for during the Oscars:

A short video called "Oscars 2013: Daniel Day-Lewis Illuminati Speech!" provides a snippet of the Best Actor award winner's acceptance speech which the poster describes as "very strange indeed," without adding any further context for his remarks, which are pasted below:

"I'd like to thank Kathy Kennedy, our producer, and through you Kathy, and through you a mighty team of co-conspirators, at the apex of that human pyramid, there are three men to whom I owe this and a great deal more: Tony Kushner, our beloved skipper Steven Spielberg, and the mysteriously beautiful mind, body and spirit of Abraham Lincoln. For my mother, thank you so much."

Illuminati theorists believe that the symbol of the pyramid is used by members of the group to communicate with one another. Check out the video for yourself below:

YouTube user ilbcnya99 uploaded a less-coherent breakdown of what he describes as the myriad links between the Illuminati and the Oscars, connecting the Queen of England, "Star Trek" and the Academy Awards in his video "Oscars 2013 iLLuminati Review? STOP!"

The clip is too meandering to attempt to describe in words, so just watch it for yourself below:

But not everyone is on board with the Illuminati rumor mill, as some observers like YouTube user silverguitar2586 posted videos to refute the claims. He sarcastically makes fun of the assertions of the Illuminati-watchers in the following video:

The jury is out, as there is no simple way to prove whether or not the New World Order exists or if it just a result of overactive imaginations and confirmation bias.

But there is certainly no shortage of opinions on the matter, and we can all expect to hear about the Illuminati's supposed control of every aspect of public life for years to come.
