Manchester United secured their first win in this year's Uefa Champions League, with a 2-0 win over Otelul Galati at the National Arena in Bucharest.

Despite a patchy performance ridden with errors, two penalties from Wayne Rooney saw Manchester United come away with three points against their Romanian minnows.

However, Nemanja Vidic saw a straight red-card for an alleged studs-up challenge on Gabriel Giurgiu and will miss the rest of the group stages.

Sergiu Costin's hand-ball in the area, just past the hour mark, saw United gain their first penalty which Rooney duly converted to become the highest scoring Englishman in the Champions League, above Paul Scholes.

Two minutes from time, Milan Perendija committed a second bookable offence in the area and United had their second penalty from which Rooney scored his 26th goal in the competition.
