The return of “Outlander” excited many fans, but the Season 3 premiere was filled with sad moments. The Starz drama kicked off shortly after Jamie and Claire said goodbye, and it looks like they’re in for a long separation. These were the moments that were the most heartbreaking in episode 1:

Seeing Claire — After killing Black Jack (Tobias Menzies) and passing out on the battlefield, Jamie (Sam Heughan) hallucinating his love Claire watching over him was a heartbreaking reminder that the two are in for a long separation.

Frank’s Sexist Co-Workers — While socializing with Frank’s (Menzies) new co-workers, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) adds her thoughts to a conversation about the upcoming election, which is apparently a faux pas. Someone tells Frank to watch what newspapers Claire reads or else she’ll start fighting for women to get into Harvard Law School. When Frank adds that Claire was a combat nurse, the man comments that she must be thrilled to be getting back to her domestic duties.

“Yes, I’m very happy,” Claire says. She is anything but, and it’s clear to see. She is forced to hold her tongue to avoid causing a scene or making trouble for Frank. It’s disheartening to see Claire let such misogynistic comments slide, and it shows what she’s facing in her new life with Frank.

Claire and Frank’s Fight — Well, we knew this was coming. Frank finally confronted Claire about the distance between them. She doesn’t even let him touch her. Claire makes it clear she is still grieving the loss of “everything truly important” to her, but Frank is obviously holding a grudge that she fell in love with someone else.

The British Killing Survivors — The British weren’t letting any Scottish soldiers escape the Battle of Culloden alive. They won’t even make an exception for the teenagers. Two boys, who look about 15 or 16, are taken to be shot.

“She’s gone” — When someone asks Jamie if they can write a letter to Claire for him, Jamie, weak and barely able to speak, simply says, “She’s gone.” When the Scotsman leaves his side to go get shot, Jamie says, “I’ll see you again soon.” He’s sure he’s going to die.

Rupert’s Death — Rupert had a quick goodbye with Jamie where he revealed Angus was the one who actually snored and that he didn’t hold a grudge against Jamie for Dougal’s death. He’d let a higher power judge Jamie for his sins. He keeps his head held high as he volunteers to be shot next.

Claire Being Put Under — Claire wanted to be awake while she gave birth, but her doctors ignored her specific directions. They drugged her without consent while she was in labor, which clearly distressed her. She wakes up asking, “Where’s my baby? Is it dead?” Luckily, no harm seemed to come of the doctor’s ignoring her choice.

It wasn’t all heartbreaking moments. Jamie being saved by a redcoat was delightful, and his reunion with Jenny was heartwarming. Meanwhile, Claire finally looked happy when she held Brianna in her arms.

“Outlander” Season 3 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on Starz.
