“Outlander” Season 3 is in full swing, and after last week’s premiere, fans know that this isn’t going to be an easy separation for Jamie and Claire. The lovers will spend the next 20 years apart, and their first years separated will likely be the hardest.

The synopsis for Season 3, episode 2 reveals that Jamie (Sam Heughan) is going to go into hiding. In the premiere, he was saved by Lord Melton (Sam Hoare), Lord John Grey’s brother. Jamie spared Grey’s life once, and Melton wanted to protect his family’s honor. He couldn’t kill Jamie. However, leaving Jamie alive means that others are looking for a traitor.

“Hiding in an isolated cave, Jamie leads a lonely life until Lallybroch is threatened by redcoats pursuing the elusive Jacobite traitor known as ‘Red Jamie,’” the “Outlander” synopsis teases.

In a sneak-peek video released Entertainment Weekly, the redcoats come looking for Jamie. They believe he is going by the alias Dunbonnet, and they think he returned home. They go to Lallybroch to interrogate Jamie’s sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly) and her husband Ian (Steven Cree). They claim they haven’t seen Jamie since before the Battle of Culloden.

“I remind you that anyone who harbors or renders aid to a Jacobite fugitive commits high treason and will be hanged under law — man, woman or child,” the soldier says, glancing at Fergus (Roman Berrux).

Another clip released by Marie Claire makes it clear that Jenny was lying. Jamie is at her home after she gives birth. It’s been six years since the Battle of Culloden, and she thinks it’s time for Jamie to move on. “How long’s it been since you’ve lain with a woman, Jamie?” she asks.

Jamie isn’t very receptive to the idea of being with another woman. He doesn’t have any interest in having children with someone else. “I won’t marry ever again,” Jamie says.

He isn’t the only one having a hard time. It seems Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is just as unable to forget Jamie. “Back in Boston, Claire and Frank struggle to coexist in a marriage haunted by the ghost of Jamie’s love,” the episode 2 synopsis says.

The trailer makes it clear that Frank (Tobias Menzies) knows she is still hung up on Jamie. Watch the clip below:

Remember, time will have gone by for both couples. While Jenny specifies it’s been 6 years for Jamie, Claire’s timeline won’t be exactly the same. A photo below shows Brianna still looking like an infant. Showrunner Ronald D. Moore previously warned that their struggles would be parallel instead.

“We did try to structure that initially but it didn’t really match up so it’s not literally five years pass in Jamie’s story and five years in Claire’s,” Moore told Showbiz Junkies. “It’s more thematic. Thematically things are parallel in between the stories but not literally in terms of chronology.”

“Outlander” Season 3, episode 2, titled “Surrender,” airs Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT on Starz.
