Jamie Outlander hair
Sam Heughan said he’ll miss Jamie’s red hair when “Outlander” ends one day. Starz

“Outlander” fans know that the Starz drama has to fake a lot of things: magic, sword fights, rapidly aging characters. However, some might not realize that even Jamie’s hair isn’t natural. Sam Heughan wasn’t born with the iconic red Fraser locks. However, it seems the blonde still has fun with ginger hair.

The actor discussed both his and co-star Caitriona Balfe’s hair in “Outlander,” and he explained that it’s an important part of the character. “[Caitriona and my] hair is very much a part of the show,” he told People. “It’s all about big hair. Claire’s hair is very unkempt. And same with Jamie. His hair is very much a part of who he is — the color and the look to him.”

It seems the 36-year-old actor doesn’t mind dyeing his locks, though. “It’s an honor playing this character for over three years now. It feels like a part of me,” he added. “It’ll be a sad day when I’ll have to lose it [the hair].”

Luckily, he’ll have to keep this look for a while. “Outlander” is currently at the beginning of Season 3, and they’ve already been renewed for Season 4. Though Jamie will age 20 years in the next season, it doesn’t seem like his character will be all grey in the future. However, it still isn’t clear what he’ll look like when the show returns.

“Jamie has to age — I’m not giving away how,” Heughan told Elle last month. “But I think it’s less about looking older and more about the experiences he’s gone through. I spend hours in makeup anyway, because I’m always covered in mud or blood. You can still see makeup on my nails here. It just won’t come off. I’ve spent the last two weeks on a battlefield.”

“Outlander” Season 3 will show plenty of young Jamie, but his luscious locks might have some blood in them. As previously reported, the third season will differ from Diana Gabaldon’s books by kicking off at the Battle of Culloden.

“Outlander” Season 3 will return to Starz in 2017.
