More than 1,000 flights have already been canceled due to the heavy snow Storm Saturn is dropping across much of the United States this week.

The Chicago Department of Aviation announced Tuesday that the city's O'Hare International (ORD) and Midway (MDW) airports are reporting more than 1,000 cancelations, and that more are likely to follow, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Storm Saturn is making its way through the region as it barrels toward the Washington, D.C., and New York City areas, and forecasts predict that nearly a foot of snow could fall on Chicago, making for treacherous air travel conditions.

As such, O'Hare had reportedly canceled more than 850 flights, while Midway had canceled more than 230 flights plus all of its Southwest Airlines flights between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time, as of the Tribune's noon report.

Travelers looking to determine whether or not their flights have been canceled or delayed have a number of options, as outlined below.

Calling the Chicago Department of Aviation's customer service line at (773)-686-2200 provides worried fliers with the opportunity to speak with a live person about the very latest information about impacts on air travel due to the storm or any other issues.

Another good option is to visit the department's individual airport status websites, where you can type in your flight number and other information in order to determine whether it has been delayed or canceled -- or if, by some stroke of luck, it's still on time.

Signing up for the department's Web alerts service is also a good idea, though travelers are advised that it is a helpful service, not a comprehensive supply of all the latest information regarding closures, cancelations and delays.

FlightStats.com also provides airport-specific breakdown by airline of cancelations, which can be helpful when trying to determine if your flight will be next on the chopping block as Storm Saturn continues on its snowy path.
