As we as gear up for the playoffs (the Golden Globes) and the Super Bowl (the Academy Awards) of the red carpet season, the People’s Choice Awards was a great warmup for the hot fashions to come.

On Wednesday night, celebrities gathered at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles to honor the best in television, music and film. The 40th anniversary show was hosted by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs of CBS’ show “2 Broke Girls” with performances by Brad Paisley, Sarah Barielles and OneRepublic. The biggest victors of the night were Sandra Bullock and Justin Timberlake, who ended the night with four wins and three wins respectively.

But as everyone knows, fashion wins are the most important victories of any awards show. So, who were the winners of the 2014 People’s Choice Awards Red Carpet?

If anyone — or anything — was the winner, it was the midi-length dress, a trend long predicted to be the hottest silhouette for Spring 2014. Kiss those miniskirts goodbye, ladies. (Though we can always count on Britney Spears for going against the fashion grain, donning a flesh-colored mini with silver floral designs for the occasion.)

Nina Dobrev literally sparkled in her midi mock turtleneck dress designed by British designer Jenny Packham, embellished with tiny crystals and paired with an edgy faux-hawk up-do. Jennifer Hudson also nailed the midi-length with a long-sleeved white boat neck dress by Kaufmanfranco (Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco are possibly the nicest design duo in fashion today, by the way). Queen Latifah wore a similar-shaped dress by Angela Dean in black.

On the sexier front, Jessica Alba also went for simple white with a corset-style strapless number by Jason Wu, with a full zip front and corset-laced up sides. And speaking of sexy, “Trophy Wife” actress Malin Akerman oozed with sex appeal in her black and white Cushnie Et Ochs dress baring some major cleavage. Akerman wasn’t the only one who rocked a low-cut dress; Heidi Klum wore her favorite silhouette in a rhinestone embellished black deep-V gown by Armani.

And, of course, the red carpet superstar Allison Williams hit it out of the park in a royal blue and white BDSM-looking David Koma midi, though we could have done without her emo-bang.

Honorable mentions: Behrs stunned in a black and white gown by Giulietta, Bullock in a graphic floral Peter Pilotto midi and the newly married Kaley Cuoco, sporting a bohemian skirt by Sachin + Babi.

The Meh’s: Lucy Hale in Gabrielle Kadonna (will “Pretty Little Liars” be filmed in space next season?), Sarah Michelle Gellar in a less-than-stellar Sachin + Babi dress and Bareilles in a lacy version of Wednesday Addams’ dress by Jill Stuart.

Of course, not everyone could be a winner, though.

One of the worst dressed of the night was actress Anna Faris, who looked washed-out in a beaded, creamy-colored boxy top with matching flare pants. But maybe I missed the memo that matchy-matchy tops and bottoms are stylish; actress Melissa McCarthy wore an extremely ill-fitted cardigan and pants combo that looked like a Forever 21 version of a Balenciaga knockoff. Perhaps she should have gone with her go-to red carpet designer, David Meister.

Speaking of Meister, the designer instead dressed Dennings in a black floral strapless ball gown that, as Perez Hilton so perfectly put it, “looks like she tripped onto a toddler’s finger painted roses.”

I’m not sure I remember her role in “American Horror Story: Coven,” but perhaps “Awkward” actress Molly Tarlov just came from an audition for the show, wearing a witchy black gown with a sheer draped cape.

Also, Naya Rivera in Michael Kors and Melissa Joan Hart: You both looked gorgeous, but last season called, they want their high-low dresses back.
