For the first time on Wednesday, the parents of sextuplets who were born on April 23 in Houston, Texas, spoke to reporters.

Lauren Perkins, 28, and David Perkins, 29, had three boys and three girls after using intrauterine insemination fertility treatments. They first heard the big news during an ultrasound visit. We knew something was up when we saw the doctor's jaw drop... he had seen 6 babies! said the couple on their website.

The babies' names are Andrew Noah, Benjamin Luke, Levi Thomas, Allison Kate, Caroline Grace and Leah Michelle. Collectively, they are referred to as the 'Perkins Pack.' All six of them were delivered within four minutes at the Texas Children's Pavilion for Women Medical Center. Lauren had managed to carry them for 30 weeks, which left them 10 weeks premature. To wait longer might have been dangerous for one baby in particular, Leah Michelle, who was having problems in utero.

Today, Leah Michelle still has some health problems and has already undergone surgery. She breathes with the help of a ventilator and is fed through an IV line.

Leah is still a very sick little girl, explained Lauren to a local ABC News station. She is struggling with setbacks, but she's a fighter.

The other five babies are experiencing normal growth. The parents hope that all six of the Perkins Pack will be able to go home from the hospital in a couple of months' time.

Lauren Perkins, a former school psychologist, and David Perkins, an IT analyst, decided to undergo fertility treatments after many months of trying. After a year and a half of trying to get pregnant and many doctor appointments, we still had no definite answer of what was wrong with Lauren, said their website. The suspicion is that the excessive running caused her to stop having a cycle.

Luckily, Lauren's running habit resulted in the good health that enabled her to carry the sextuplets as long as she did. Now, the couple is relying on friends and family to help them prepare their house for the babies' arrival.

We are just thanking God every day for our babies and we are looking forward to bringing them home, said Lauren to AP.
