The NBA Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Maurice Cheeks, according to media reports on Sunday.

Yahoo Sports and the Detroit News reported the axing of Cheeks, though the team has yet to confirm the firing.

Cheeks has been in charge of the National Basketball Association team for just 50 games since taking the job last June.

The Pistons stand ninth in the Eastern Conference this season at 21-29, with victories in their last two games.

Cheeks, who played 15 NBA seasons as a point guard, previously served as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers.

It appears team officials didn't notify any or at least several players of their decision before the media. Pistons guard Brandon Jennings actually discovered Cheeks was fired on social media site Twitter, and so did forward Charlie Villanueva.
