Sony promises to sell the upcoming console known only as the PlayStation 5 for a price that will be “appealing” to consumers in light of the specs it is reported to have.

Previously, Sony’s Mark Cerny, the same person who led the development of the current-gen PlayStation 4, revealed a few key features the anticipated PlayStation 5 has. The upcoming console, known to all as the PS5, will be powered by third-gen AMD Ryzen chips and will feature eight 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture cores.

Backing the processor is a custom GPU based on Radeon’s Navi chips that can support Ray tracing, and a custom piece that supports 3D audio. With these, the PS5 can be expected to feature incredibly immersive video and audio.

Cerny said the PS5 will feature support for 8K resolution, which will make it future-proof for a few years. It will be compatible with PS VR, and will be backwards compatible. Yes, the PS5 will be able to play PS4 favorites such as “Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain” and many others.

The upcoming console will feature solid state drives (SSD) that will allow for a more seamless open world gameplay. Cerny demonstrated the benefits of using SSD by showing “Spider-Man” videogame footage from the PS4 and the PS5: Open-world load times dropped from 15 seconds on the PS4 to less than one second on the PS5.

Cerny also teased that some upcoming titles, like Hideo Kojima’s “Death Stranding,” will be playable on both the PS4 and PS5. The PS5, however, won’t be released until 2020 according to head of PlayStation John Kodera, GameSpot reported. Until then, fans are left to imagine how the game will fare on both consoles.

Advanced gaming tech at an appealing price

With all these features, fans are left with a big question in their minds: how much will the PlayStation 5 cost them? Of course, no one expects it to be cheap given the specs, but what Cerny told Wired correspondent Peter Rubin should give gamers a reason to breathe:

“I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set.”

Sony hasn’t announced an official price and release date as of yet. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
