  • Sony would reportedly delay the release of one of its major titles to 2022
  • SIE Worldwide Studios Head Hulst said in June the release date of "Horizon Forbidden West" was tentative
  • Sony is reportedly planning to hold its next PlayStation State of Play in September

Rumors about the release window of the next PlayStation State of Play, as well as the release of the heavily anticipated PlayStation exclusive title, "Horizon Forbidden West," are rife online.

Over the weekend, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that Sony will delay the release of "Horizon Forbidden West" to the first quarter of 2022, citing a person familiar with the matter. The video game journalist and insider said the COVID-19 pandemic had caused "production challenges" and "forced developers to work from home for months."

Bloomberg's report aligns with what GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb said in the latest episode of the "GrubbSnax" series with Giant Bomb. The video games journalist mentioned that Aloy's next adventure might not happen until 2022. Grubb, however, said the potential delay was not confirmed. He also mentioned that Sony was preparing for its next PlayStation State of Play, which could happen in September.

Grubb also noted that he was not certain if the upcoming PlayStation event next month would be a general event or one dedicated to "Horizon Forbidden West."

In July, industry insider Roberto Serrano shared on Twitter that the Sony event would happen in September.

He noted, "So, the big PlayStation event (around 1hr long) may have been moved from August 12nd to September leaving a little State of Play (less than 30 min) on August 12nd, or the other way around." However, he clarified that a regular State of Play could still take place on Aug. 12 but it would be most likely a smaller showcase. If true, it looks like the one happening this month would center primarily on one of the company's upcoming games.

Sony has not yet said anything about its next PlayStation State of Play schedule or the release date of "Horizon Forbidden West." Last June, Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Head Hermen Hulst noted that the game's holiday release date was tentative.

He said, "For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season." He also mentioned on the PlayStation blog, "But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can."
