Police are investigating the death of a newborn baby that was tossed aside like garbage in a Washington Heights alley on Tuesday.

Officers responded to an emergency phone call by a local resident and arrived on the scene of West 191st Street around 6:15 p.m., reports NY1. Police say they found the newborn in a plastic bag inside of a bucket. Residents are particularly disturbed by this death and hoping justice is served to the possible perpetrators.

They thought they wasn't gonna get caught because they put it in five bags and just threw it there. But they did, and they're gonna get caught, said one resident, according to NY1.

It's sad. It is. It's very sad, said another, said NY1.

New York medical examiners are currently investigating the cause of death.

This death is particularly troubling because New York Safe Haven laws allow a baby to be left a hospital, police precinct, or fire house anonymously.
