The 84-year-old Pope Benedict XVI sent out his first tweet on Tuesday. It read:

Dear Friends, I just launched News.va Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI. The tweet was sent from the Vatican Twitter account of @news_va_en.

News.va features the latest news from the Vatican and serves as an instrument of evangelization at the service of the papal ministry.

Currently, the website features a picture with the words A Historic Tweet that shows the Pope sending out his first tweet with an Apple iPad.

As seen in the video below, the Pope didn't personally type in the tweet. Instead, it was typed in for him and he simply pressed the button send it. Before he sent the tweet, the Pope was shown the News.va website on the iPad.

Below is the video. The Pope made the tweet at the 2:00 mark.
