Authorities in Seattle are investigating a package that was sent to a Kmart department store at 132nd and Aurora Avenue N. Reports indicated that employees at the store opened a box that was mysteriously delivered to their store only to discover 10 pounds of marijuana.

Seattle Weekly reported that the ganja was wrapped in garbage bags, packing peanuts and cleaning-fluid-soaked pages from a Korean newspaper. Police said that while the package was originally mailed from Los Angeles with an intended destination of Philadelphia, it must’ve gotten caught in the mix along the way. Furthermore, the box's sender used the address for the Aurora Kmart on the return label.

“Delivery information on the package indicates it was originally shipped from Los Angeles to a Philadelphia address, but never made it to its intended destination in Philly … Whoever sent the package listed the address of the Seattle Kmart on the return label, for some reason,” police department spokesman Jonah Spagenthal-Lee said.

The police department has referred the case to its narcotics unit, Seattle Weekly said.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer said on its website that the package was believed to have been handled by UPS. A company spokesman said on Thursday afternoon they had not been contacted by Seattle police and weren't sure it was a UPS package, adding that the company's security team would be in touch with police officers if UPS handled the item. Police did not give additional information about the package.

In related news, the Kmart store in North Seattle where the package was delivered – a fixture at 13200 Aurora Ave. N. since the 1970s – is scheduled to close on Sunday.
