OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/03/10 -- Caribou Copper Resources Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: CKR) (the "Company") is pleased to announce observations from its recently completed trenching program.
As part of this year's exploration activities on it's Caribou Dome property, and in preparation for this year's drilling, the Company exposed copper mineralization in nine (9) trenches in the eastern portion of mapped surface mineralization. These trenches intersected lodes 3, 7 and 8 of previously identified surface mineralization which historically have not been significantly tested.
The Company's Chief Geologist, John Duncan, who oversaw the trenching program reports, "Mapping of bulldozer trenches which expose mostly tundra-covered copper showings at Caribou Dome indicates that significant copper mineralization persists at the surface for approximately 215 meters horizontally eastward from the previously drilled lodes and across more than 90 meters of vertical relief. The mineralization is contained primarily within two thin black shale and limestone horizons enclosed within a package of intermediate to mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The sediment horizons strike essentially east-west and dip vertically to steeply northward, and are variably sheared parallel to bedding. Mineralization consists primarily of chrysocolla and malachite in fractures and shears within black shale. The highest grade mineralization, visually estimated to be 3% to 6% Cu over true widths of 1 to 3 meters, occurs within the most intensely sheared sediments. Weaker mineralization locally extends into the igneous country rock where it has been affected by the shearing. The incompetent shales are interpreted to have localized and controlled shear strain. Shearing, in combination with surface oxidation, has remobilized synsedimentary copper mineralization originally deposited within the shales. No significant evidence of low-angle faulting, which is interpreted to have affected the previously drilled lodes at Caribou Dome, was observed in the trench mapping."
Fifty-three (53) chip samples were collected across visible oxide copper mineralization of which fifty-one (51) were collected within the nine trenches. One (1) additional grab sample was taken from an outcrop in the same area. These samples were sent to ALS Chemex in Fairbanks, Alaska for analysis.
The results of this field work will be used to identify drill targets in lodes 3, 7 and 8, which have seen very little historic drilling.
In June, the company also completed significant improvements to the camp including improving drainage for the access road and expanding the accommodations. These improvements will enable larger work crews and more reliable access as the project is advanced.
