University of California Must Recognize 14,000 CUE Members

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Coalition of University Employees (CUE), comprising 14,000 administrative, clerical and allied services employees at the University of California, has had its affiliation vote with the Teamsters upheld by the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB). Although the membership vote took place several months ago, challenges were filed against the affiliation.

"Finally, we have a clear path before us," Maria LaBarrie, an employee on the Riverside campus, said today. "We had a majority vote that directed us to affiliate with the Teamsters, and now the University must recognize CUE-Teamsters Local 2010 as the bargaining unit representative in collective bargaining. We expect this affiliation will influence the course of negotiations for our long-overdue collective bargaining agreement."

The PERB also found that CUE had afforded its members due process with regards to the Teamster affiliation. And, finally, the PERB determined that the bargaining unit will have substantial continuity as a result of the affiliation.

Also, yesterday, both lawsuits that were filed challenging the CUE affiliation with the Teamsters were dismissed, with prejudice, meaning that they may not be re-filed. With these dismissals, all of the litigation regarding the CUE-Teamsters affiliation has been concluded in favor of the voting members of CUE.

CUE-Teamsters Local 2010 is affiliated with the Public Services Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters which represents over 239,000 public service employees throughout the United States.
