The company announced Friday that it intends to buy back up to $8 billion of its common stock to return to shareholders an amount equivalent to the value of the company’s original investment in TNK-BP joint venture. The announcement comes just one day after BP completed the sale of its 50 percent stake in TNK-BP to Russia's state-controlled oil producer Rosneft.
