With signings like Erik Lamela, Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas will be pleased with his club's summer transfer business. Reuters

Arsenal
In (notables):
Mesut Ozil (Real Madrid, £42.5m), Mathieu Flaimini (free), Yaya Sanogo (free), Emiliano Viviano (Palermo, loan)

Out (notables): Gervinho (Roma, £8m), Vito Mannone (Sunderland, £1.5m), Marouane Chamakh (Crystal Palace, free), Andre Santos, undisclosed), Andrey Arshavin (Zenit St Petersburg, free), Denilson (Sao Paulo, free), Sebastien Squillaci (released), Johan Djourou (Hamburg, loan)

Verdict: Ozil’s arrival grabbed headlines on deadline day and placated those calling for major investment. However, despite the arrival of a world class player in his peak years, it cannot disguise the somewhat amateurish activity that went before it. Arsene Wenger also failed to add a top class striker and settled for former Gunner Flamini to fill the void in defensive midfield. Both positions should have been of higher priority than another attacking midfielder.

Grade: C

Aston Villa
In:
Libor Kozak (Lazio, £5m), Jores Okore (Nordsjaelland, £4m), Leandro Bacuna (Groningen, £3m), Aleksander Tonev (Lech Poznan, £2.5m), Antonio Luna (Sevilla, £2m), Nicklas Helenius (Aalborg, £1.2m), Jed Steer (Norwich, free)

Out: Barry Bannan (Crystal Palace, undisclosed), Richard Dunne (QPR, free), Brett Holman (Al Nasr, free), Eric Lichaj (Nottingham Forest, free), Jean Makoun (Rennes, free), Darren Bent (Fulham, loan), Nathan Delfouneso (Blackpool, loan), Stephen Ireland (Stoke, loan)

Verdict: Perhaps Villa’s best business was holding onto last season’s top scorer Christian Benteke. Kozak arrived on deadline day to provide a back-up to the Belgian, while Luna is already proving to be a good addition. Paul Lambert has brought in further depth and quality to his young squad.

Grade: B

Cardiff City
In:
Gary Medel (Sevilla, £9.5m), Steven Caulker (Tottenham, £8m), Andreas Cornelius (FC Copenhagen, £7.5m), Peter Odemwingie (West Brom, £2.5m), Kevin Theophile-Catherine (Rennes, £2.1m), John Brayford (Derby County, £1.5m), Simon Moore (Brentford, £150,000), Maximiliano Amondarain (CA Progreso, free)

Out: Elliot Parish (Bristol City, free)

Verdict: Malky Mackay couldn’t ask for anything more than the financial support he has been given to try and keep Cardiff in the Premier League. He appears to have spent it wisely too, with Medel a quality and steely midfield operator, Caulker brining Premier League experience to the back line, while Cornelius and Odemwingie could provide crucial goals.

Grade: A

Chelsea
In:
Willian (Anzhi Makhachkala, £32m), Andre Schurrle (Bayer Leverkusen, £18m), Marco van Ginkel (Vitesse Arnhem, £9m), Christian Atsu (Porto, £3.5m), Cristian Cuevas (O’Higgins, £3m), Samuel Eto’o (Anzhi Makhachkala, free), Mark Schwarzer (Fulham, free)

Out: Jeffrey Bruma (PSV Eindhoven, £2.5m), Ross Turnbull (Doncaster, free), Yossi Benayoun (released), Paul Ferreira (released), Hilario (released), Florent Malouda (released), Cristian Cuevas (Vitesse Arnhem, loan), Christian Atsu (Vitesse Arnhem, loan), Victor Moses (Liverpool, loan), Marko Marin (Sevilla, loan), Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid, loan), Oriol Romeu (Valencia, loan) Romelu Lukaku (Everton, loan), Wallace (Inter Milan, loan)

Verdict: There was no avalanche of signings as occurred in Jose Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge. This time the focus was on youth, with the exciting arrivals of Schurrle and Van Ginkel. The club could yet pay for failing to bring in a top class striker, with it remaining to be seen how much Mourinho can glean from 32-year-old Eto’o. A commanding central midfield presence was also not attained. Still in question is whether Willian’s arrival was more than just a way of getting one over on Tottenham and Andre Villas-Boas.

Grade: B-

Crystal Palace
In:
Dwight Gayle (Peterborough, £6m), Jack Hunt (Huddersfield, £2m), Jimmy Kebe (Reading, £2m), Jose Campana (Sevilla, £1.75m), Adrain Mariappa (Reading, £1m), Stephen Dobie (Brighton, £850,000), Elliot Grandin (Blackpool, free) Kevin Phillips (Blackpool, free), Marouane Chamakh (Arsenal, free), Jerome Thomas (unattached, free), Barry Bannan (Aston Villa, undisclosed), Cameron Jerome (Stoke, loan)

Out: Jermaine Easter (Millwall, free)

Verdict: Ian Holloway has certainly been active in the transfer window, but there is a suspicion that it has been a case of quantity over quality. Notably, few players of proven top-flight pedigree have arrived. Biggest signing Dwight Gayle has much pressure on his shoulders, alongside Chamakh, to provide the goals to prevent Palace’s stay in the Premier League lasting just a single season once more.

Grade: C-

Everton
In:
James McCarthy (Wigan, £13m), Arouna Kone (Wigan, £6m), Joel Robles (Atletico Madrid, £2m), Antolin Alcaraz (Wigan, free), Gareth Barry (Manchester City, loan), Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea, loan)

Out: Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United, £27.5m), Victor Anichebe (West Brom, £5m), Thomas Hizelsperger (released), Phil Neville (retired), Jan Mucha (released) Jasper Johns (Sheffield United, free), Conor McAleny (Brentford, loan)

Verdict: It went right to the wire, but it always appeared likely that Fellaini would move on. While he was an important performer, new manger Roberto Martinez has arguably secured a midfielder more suited to his style of play in James McCarthy. Barry adds further quality to the midfield, while the arrival of Lukaku could be a difference maker in providing the goals missing for Everton for so long.

Grade: B+

Fulham
In:
Maarten Stekelenburg (Roma, £4.8m), Scott Parker (Tottenham, £2m), Sasha Riether (Cologne, £1.3m), Elsad Zverotic (Young Boys, undisclosed), Fernando Amorebieta (Athletic Bilbao, free), Derek Boateng (Dnipro, free) Adel Taarabt (Queens Park Rangers, loan) Darren Bent (Aston Villa, loan)

Out: Mark Schwarzer (Chelsea, free) Alex Smith (Swindon, free), Simon Davies (released), (Mahamadou Diarra (released)

Verdict: Plenty of proven quality has arrived, but it has done little to address the issue of an ageing squad. Bringing in Adel Taarabt and Darren Bent to join Dimitar Berbatov in attack is an exciting prospect when Fulham have the ball, but problems lie in store when the opposition gain possession. Parker and Amorebieta bring experience to the midfield and defense, respectively, but neither are now the most athletic.

Grade: C+

Hull City
In:
Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham, £5m), Curtis Davies (Birmingham, £2.25m), Ahmed Elmohamady (Sunderland, £2m), Allan McGregor (Besiktas, £1.8m), Yannick Sagbo (Evian, £1.5m), Maynor Figueroa (Wigan, free), Steve Harper (Newcastle, free), Danny Graham (Sunderland, loan), Jake Livermore (Tottenham, loan) Gedo (Al Ahli, loan)

Out: Corry Evans (Blackburn (£750,000), Jack Hobbs (Nottingham Forest, loan)

Verdict: Steve Bruce pulled off a coup by securing midfield pair Huddlestone and Livermore from Tottenham and the duo will surely be key if Hull are to survive. However, the failure to bring in a reliable goal-scorer may prove their downfall.

Grade: B-

Liverpool
In:
Mamadou Sakho (Paris Saint-Germain, £12m), Iago Aspas (Celta Vigo, £9m), Simon Mignolet (Sunderland, £9m), Luis Alberto (Sevilla, £6.8m), Tiago Ilori (Sporting Lisbon, £7m), Kolo Toure (Manchester City, free), Aly Cissokho (Valencia, loan), Victor Moses (Chelsea, loan)

Out: Andy Carroll (West Ham, £15m), Stewart Downing (West Ham, £5m), Jonjo Shelvey (Swansea, £5m), Jay Spearing (Bolton, £2m), Dani Pacheco (AD Alcorcon, undisclosed), Jamie Carragher (retired), Pepe Reina (Napoli, loan), Fabio Borini (Sunderland, loan) Oussama Assaidi (Stoke, loan)

Verdict: A very good window for Brendan Rodgers. More of his predecessors transfer missteps have been removed from the wage bill, while both the squad and first team have been strengthened. Liverpool should be better at the back with Mignolet replacing Reina and the arrival of Sakho and Toure in defense. There are also improved options going forward and somehow Luis Suarez has also stayed put. The only disappointment was failing to sign a top level offensive midfielder like Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Grade: B+

Manchester City
In:
Fernandinho (Shakhtar Donetsk, £30m), Stevan Jovetic (Fiorentina, £22m), Alvaro Negredo (Sevilla, undisclosed), Jesus Navas (Sevilla, £17m), Marin Demichelis (Atletico Madrid, £3.5m)

Out: Carlos Tevez (Juventus (£12m), Denis Suarez (Barcelona, £1.3m), Maicon (Roma, undisclosed), Wayne Bridge (Reading, free), Roque Santa Cruz (Malaga, free), Gareth Barry (Everton, loan) Scott Sinclair (West Brom, loan)

Verdict: All in all a much better summer than last year. City acted decisively and have given new coach Manuel Pellegrini plenty to work with. Strengthened up front and in midfield, City also have a valuable threat out wide with Jesus Navas. However, the title challengers failed to sign a much needed central defender until the final hours and when they did it was the somewhat creaking Demichelis.

Grade: B+

Manchester United
In:
Marouane Fellaini (Everton, £27.5m), Guillermo Varela (Penarol, £2.4m)

Out: Paul Scholes (retired), Scott Wootton (Leeds United, undisclosed), Nick Powell (Wigan, loan), Bebe (Pacos de Ferrerira, loan), Ryan Tunnicliffe

Verdict: For a club of Manchester United’s stature the first transfer window for manager David Moyes and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been an embarrassing shambles from beginning to end. Even the club’s one major signing represents humiliation in the fact that Fellaini could have been signed for £4 million cheaper before the end of July due a clause in his contract. The story of club officials reportedly turning up in Spain to pay the release clause for Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera only later to be discovered as imposters neatly sums up United’s farcical summer.

Grade: D

Newcastle United
In:
Loic Remy (QPR, loan), Olivier Kemen (Metz, undisclosed)

Out: James Perch (Wigan, £750,000), Danny Simpson (QPR, free), Steve Harper (Hull City, free), Shane Ferguson (Birmingham City, loan), Mehdi Abeid (Panathinaikos, loan)

Verdict: Joe Kinnear’s appointment as the man to oversee Newcastle’s recruitment strategy was bizarre at the time and is even more so now. The man that wanted to be judged on his signings has only managed to oversee the arrival of a 16-year-old and Remy from QPR on loan, who was already close to a move to St James’ Park in January. The French forward is also currently out on bail after rape allegations. The one bright spot was that the club managed to hang onto Yohan Cabaye and Haten Ben Arfa. Manager Alan Pardew is likely to pay the price for the lack of squad strengthening but there is little doubt where the true blame lies.

Grade: F

Norwich City
In:
Ricky van Wolfswinkel (Sporting Lisbon, £8.5m) Leroy Fer (FC Twente, £7m), Gary Hooper (Celtic, £5m), Martin Olsson (Blackburn, £2.5m), Nathan Redmond (Birmingham, £2.2m), Javier Garrido (Lazio, £1.28m), Carlo Nash (Stoke, free), Johan Elmander (Galatasaray, loan)

Out: Grant Holt (Wigan, £2m), James Vaughan (Huddersfield, £1m), Tom Adeyemi (Birmingham, free)

Verdict: Chirs Hughton has has made good strides to address the lack of firepower last season with Van Wolfswinkel, Hooper and Elmander all coming in and Redmond providing an added threat from out wide. Fer also looks an astute signing in midfield.

Grade: B

Southampton
In:
Pablo Daniel Osvaldo (Roma, £15m), Victor Wanyama (Celtic, £12.5m), Dejan Lovren (Lyon, £8.5m)

Out: Veggard Forren (Molde, undisclosed), Dean Hammond (Leicester, undisclosed), Steve de Ridder (Utrecht, free), Frazer Richardson (Middlesbrough, free), Emmanuel Mayuka (Sochaux, loan)

Verdict: Southampton have opted to try and go for quality over quantity this summer and have strengthened the spine of their team. Lovren improves what was often a shaky defense last season, while Wanyama adds tenacity and dynamism to the midfield. And, if Mauricio Pochettino can keep Osvaldo’s head right, then they will have pulled off quite the coup in securing the Italy international striker.

Grade: B

Stoke City
In:
Erik Pieters (PSV Eindhoven, £3m), Marko Arnautovic (Werder Bremen, £2m), Marc Muniesa (Barcelona, free), Alex Grant (Portsmouth, free), Juan Agudelo (New England Revolution, free, to join in January) Stephen Ireland (Aston Villa, loan)

Out: Matthew Upson (Brighton, free), Dean Whitehead (Middlesbrough, free), Rory Delap (Burton Albion, free), Carlo Nash (Norwich, free)

Verdict: Mark Hughes is surely expected to overhaul Tony Pulis’ rigid playing style, but struggled to bring in players to ease that transition. Pieters gives Stoke a proper full-back on the left, while Arnautovic could provide more quality going forward if he keeps his head straight. After years of Pulis spending a lot of money not to develop the side, when investment was most needed it has not been forthcoming.

Grade: C+

Sunderland
In:
Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar, £6.5m), Emanuele Giaccherini, Juventus, £6.5m), Charis Mavrias (Panathinaikos, £3m), Vito Mannone (Arsenal £1.5m), David Moberg Karlsson (Gothenburg, 1.5m), El-Hadji Ba (Le Havre, £380,000), Mobido Diakite (Lazio, free), Cabral (Basel, free), Fabio Boroni (Liverpool, loan), Andrea Dossena (Napoli, loan), Sung-Yueng Ki (Swansea City, loan), Ondrej Celustka (Trabzonspor, loan)

Out: Simon Mignolet (Liverpool, £9m), Stephane Sessegnon (West Brom, £5.5m), Ahmed Elmohamady (Hull, £2m), James McClean (Wigan, £1.5m), Titus Bramble (released)

Verdict: It remains to be seen whether it was a smart move to allow Paulo di Canio to virtually overhaul an entire team, but it is certainly a brave one by Sunderland. While huge numbers have arrived, their quality must be questioned. Giaccherini has shone as a role player for Italy and Juventus, but can he be the focal point for a midlevel team? Altidore, while improved from his last stint in the Premier League with Hull, remains rough around the edges. The arrival of Ki on loan from Swansea could prove to be the shrewdest move.

Grade: C-

Swansea City
In:
Wilfried Bony (Vitesse Arnhem, £12m), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool, £5m), Jordi Amat (Espanyol, £2,5m), Alejandro Pozuelo (Real Betis, £425,000), Jonathan de Guzman (Villarreal, loan), Alvaro Vazquez (Getafe, loan)

Out: Kemy Agustien (Brighton, free), David Cornell (St Mirren, free), Mark Gower (Charlton, free), Kyle Bartley (Birmingham, loan) Sung Sung-Yueng (Sunderland, loan)

Verdict: At the start of the transfer window it appeared that a dispute over transfers could lead to the exit of Michael Laudrup. Yet, the Dane stayed and the club broke its transfer record on the Eredivisie’s top scorer last season. Bony could be a big hit, while defender Jordi Amat should prove another astute signing from Spain.

Grade: B

Tottenham Hotspur
In:
Erik Lamela (Roma, £26.5m reported), Roberto Soldado, (Valencia (£26m), Paulinho (Corinthians, £17m), Christian Eriksen (Ajax, £11.5m), Etienne Capoue, £9m), Vlad Chiriches (Steaua Bucharest, £8.5m), Nacer Chadli (FC Twente, £7m)

Out: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid, £86m), Steven Caulker (Cardiff, £8m), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders, £6m). Tom Huddlestone (Hull, £5m), Scott Parker (Fulham, £2m), Benoit Assou-Ekotto (QPR, loan), Tom Carroll (QPR, loan)

Verdict: It has been an incredibly successful summer for Tottenham. Realizing they could do nothing about the departure of Bale, chairman Daniel Levy, manager Andre Villas-Boas and new technical director Franco Baldini were proactive in making sure they emerged stronger. There is much to be excited about for Spurs fans -- from finally having a top level striker in Soldado, to a man who could eclipse Bale in Lamela and a goal-scoring midfielder perfect for the Premier League in Paulinho. The only thing preventing it being a perfect window was the failure to secure a left-back.

Grade: A

West Brom
In:
Stephane Sessegnon (Sunderland, £5.5m), Victor Anichebe (Everton, £5.5m), Nicholas Anelka (Juventus, free), Diego Lugano (PSG, free), Matej Vydra (Udinese, loan) Scott Sinclair (West Brom, loan), Goran Popov (Dynamo Kiev, loan), Morgan Amalfitano (Marseille, loan)

Out: Peter Odemwingie (Cardiff, £2.5m), Mar-Antoine Fortune (Wigan, free), Gonzalo Jara (Nottingham Forest, free), Jerome Thomas (Crystal Palace, free)

Verdict: One of Steve Clarke’s main problems in the transfer window has been to try and replace the goals lost with Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea. The fact that he tried to re-sign the Belgium on loan on deadline day shows that Clarke is not entirely happy with his options. There are doubts about all three of the forward signings, Anelka, Vydra and Anichebe. Clarke must try and get the best from the often frustrating Sessegnon to justify the outlay on the talented attacking midfielder.

Grade: C+

West Ham
In:
Andy Carroll (Liverpool, £15m), Stewart Downing (West Ham, £5m), Danny Whitehead (Stockport, undisclosed), Adrian (Real Betis, free), Ravzan Rat (Shakhtar Donetesk, free)

Out: Robert Hall (Bolton, £450,000), Gary O’Neil (QPR, free), Jake Larkins (Leyton Orient, free) Carlton Cole (released)

Verdict: The club delved deep to make Carroll’s loan move permanent, while winger Downing has also been brought in from Liverpool to leave little doubt about Sam Allardyce’s tactics in the season ahead. Yet, with the failure to sign another striker, much will depend on the ability to keep Carroll fit. That Carlton Cole may be re-signed after being released whiffs of desperation.
