BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/29/08 -- In September 1938, a powerful hurricane struckthe east coast with no warning. Now, on the 70th anniversary of the storm, sailing superstar Carol Newman Cronin has published "Oliver'sSurprise" (September 2008, GemmaMedia), a story about a youngboy who transcends time in her native Jamestown, Rhode Island. Member ofthe elite US Sailing Team from 2001-2007, Cronin has used her sailingpassion to paint a picture of Jamestown just days before the Storm of '38slammed New England.

"It's interesting how strong people's memories are. They have their ownstories or family stories passed down," says Olympian and national sailingchampion Cronin. "It's a very powerful story today, and certainly inJamestown that's true. Living here led me in this direction. I had to workas a race official to get experience for the book, and then I had to go tothe Olympics to finish it," she says, laughing.

Longing to feel closer to his grandfather, Oliver skips school on aSeptember afternoon and hides out on a tired schooner. When he wakes up onthe ways of his grandfather's boatyard and realizes he's been transportedback to 1938, he must decide what to do before the dangerous hurricane he'dbeen studying in school hits. While the main character is a 12 year oldboy, Oliver's story is more than appropriate for an adult audience.

John Burnham, Editor of Cruising World, said "Through young Oliver's eyes,Carol Newman Cronin offers a view of life along the 1930s Jamestownwaterfront. Above all, 'Oliver'sSurprise' reminds us of the connectedness of family and friends throughgenerations."

"Oliver'sSurprise" is enriched by a glossary of terms, maps, and a short historyof the hurricane. With this tender rendition, a new generation learns aboutthe effects of a powerful storm that devastated the Eastern seaboard.

Carol NewmanCronin crowned a lifetime of competitive achievement by winning tworaces for the USA at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. She has won numerousnational and international sailing championships. Since retiring fromOlympic sailing, Carol has focused on writing and graphic design.

GemmaMedia is a Boston-basedpublisher, exploring people and places and the spaces in between.
