BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -- (Marketwire) -- 09/30/08 -- This Energy Awareness Month, Americansare turning to the Yellow Pages to help save on utility bills. According tothe Yellow Pages Association (YPA), "Windows" ranks 85th out of more than4,000 headings and generates 26 million references annually, with thegreatest frequency coming in October as people prepare for winter.

"In October, homeowners are starting to think about winterizing their homesand about what they can do to make their homes more energy efficient," saidRick Perry, Director of Industry Standards at the Window and DoorManufacturers Association. "Replacing existing windows withenergy-efficient windows offers one of the biggest values in energyreduction."

According to the Efficient Windows Collaborative, energy-efficient windowtechnologies, such as glazings, coatings, fills, and spacers, protecthomeowners from unwanted heat loss and air leakage, as well as keep windowsurfaces warmer to improve comfort and minimize condensation. Theseadvances provide measurable results. For example, a 2,000-square-foot homewith high-performance,energy-efficient windows can save 39 percent on its heating bill comparedwith the same home that has a typical single-pane, aluminum window.(1)

For consumers who are considering purchasing new windows, Perry suggestsstarting by thinking about the application of your window. Decide on whatstyle, frame type, and function would be best for your home. To research,Perry suggests visiting the Efficient Windows Collaborative's Web site atwww.efficientwindows.org. Once you've chosen the window that will meet yourneeds, Perry recommends looking up a local dealer under the "Windows"heading in the Yellow Pages.

"Local window companies rely on Yellow Pages advertising to reach theirtarget consumer, as well as achieve a superior return on investment," saidLarry Small, Director of Research for the YPA. "The average return oninvestment received by local windows display advertisers is $27 of salesrevenue for every $1 spent on advertising."(2)

The Yellow Pages is the most frequently referenced medium before a purchasedecision is made at this heading, and 94 percent of purchasers indicatedbuying from a place they saw in the Yellow Pages. Under the "Windows"heading, most users (73 percent) indicated looking at a local windowcompany over a chain store, making the Yellow Pages a top local resourcefor residential window needs.(3)

The "Windows" heading is most often referenced in the Midwest and Westregions, and Perry believes this is because of the extreme climates.(3)

"In the West, especially the coastal areas, windows are replaced to provideprotection from high winds," Perry said. "Proper windows also reduce thesun's UV rays, which heat homes and allow consumers' air conditioning unitsto function more efficiently. In the Midwest, where the winters are moresevere, energy-efficient windows keep out the cold, which reduces heatingcosts."
