Orange County, California Standardizes on Voltage SecureMail to Safeguard Email Communications
Simple but Powerful Encryption System Will Protect Email for More Than 40 County Agencies
PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/07/08 -- Orange County, California, one of the mostpopulous counties in the United States, has standardized on VoltageSecureMail from Voltage Security, Inc. to encrypt and protect emailcommunications for its employees.
The Voltage SecureMail system will safeguard email for more than 26,000full-time and contract employees across 43 Orange County agencies. VoltageSecureMail will also fulfill privacy and compliance mandates such as HIPAA(the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and support thecounty's federated IT infrastructure, leveraging common classifications, policies, global LDAP repositories, shared resources and economies ofscale.
"Our highest priority was to enable departments to address their areas ofgreatest information risk, and mitigate regulatory compliance concerns asquickly as possible," said Tony Lucich, chief information security officer(CISO) and enterprise architect for the County of Orange. "Email stood outas a major area of concern, so we first needed to provide blanket coveragefor any agency that handles sensitive content via email."
However, in the security industry, Lucich points out, email security isoften synonymous with monstrous cost and implementation. So, he and histeam set out to examine the available technologies and products beforeselecting and standardizing on Voltage SecureMail. The solution leveragesIdentity-Based Encryption (IBE), a cryptographic breakthrough that enablesunprecedented end-user usability, product scalability and solutionmanageability, while simultaneously providing the lowest total cost ofownership (TCO). Lucich's goal was to offer these benefits and more in anautomated encryption solution that works seamlessly within its inbound andoutbound content management framework, and was easy enough for technologynovices.
Using a weighted matrix of important criteria to guide theirdecision-making, Lucich's IT team invited vendors to demonstrate theirsolutions and ultimately judged Voltage SecureMail to be the most effectiveemail encryption solution available.
With Voltage SecureMail, the County of Orange can ensure email and mobilemessaging is secured with end-to-end, content level encryption. VoltageSecureMail integrated easily into the existing infrastructure, includingSecure Computing's IronMail appliance, providing what Tony says is "barnone, the best encryption coupled with the best anti-spam solution in theindustry." Voltage is rapidly deployed internally and externally -- even inthe largest of organizations.
Voltage SecureMail supports several key use cases in Orange County. Forexample, the county's health and social service agencies frequently need toshare personal medical information on clients with outside doctors andhealthcare providers. As per HIPAA regulations, this information must beencrypted when sent via email. In that scenario, Voltage SecureMail withits high scalability key management enables Orange County officials to sendencrypted messages to their intended recipients, regardless of what kind ofoperating systems or email software they use.
"Orange County is the latest in a growing list of large governmentorganizations and corporations that are discovering how Voltage SecureMailwith its centralized key management delivers power and peace of mind forhighly sensitive email communications," said Wasim Ahmad, vice president,Voltage Security.
