Pride Learning Center Battles Dyslexia One Child at a Time
Southern California's Leading Center for Children With Dyslexia and ADHD Encourages Parents to Know What Signs to Look for and How to Address Difficult Issues Surrounding Learning Disabilities
LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/08/08 -- As the school year gets underway, LosAngeles-based Pride Learning Center (www.pridelearningcenter.com) gears upfor an influx of phone calls and drop-ins from frustrated parents who can'tseem to figure out why their child isn't performing "up to par." FounderKarina Richland, M.A., whose twenty years of teaching and researchingexperience have made her a nationally sought-after expert in the areas ofdyslexia and ADHD, reveals how and what to address with regard to thisoften misunderstand and "unexpected" learning disorder.
"Dyslexia affects as many as one out of every five children," remarkedRichland, M.A. "While it primarily affects one's ability to learn to readand develop a strong understanding of language, dyslexia manifests itselfuniquely in each child, and each child will have his/her own set ofsymptoms."
According to Richland, some common warning signs are:
In Preschool Age Children:
-- Starts speaking late-- Takes a while to get words out-- Enjoys being read to but no interest in words or letters-- Weak fine motor skills-- Trouble articulating R, L, M, and N (e.g. "gween" for "green")
In School Age Children:
-- Late in establishing hand dominance-- Reverses letters and numbers-- Writing barely legible with some letters unusually spaced-- Cannot follow through with multiple steps or chores-- Adds or leaves out words when reading-- Comprehension difficulties-- Grades do not match the child's intelligence-- Spells phonetically instead of applying spelling rules
