When H3G Austria was informed that its current anti-spam solution wasreaching end of life, it was faced with the challenge of finding a newsolution that would help ensure that Service Level Agreements (SLA) withits customers would still be met. With a typical rate of three infectedemails per second, an effective solution for catching malicious content wasessential to help ensure the high performance of the operator's Exchangeservers and maintain SLAs. In addition, with a fast growing volume of emailtraffic, H3G needed a scalable solution.

After carrying out a thorough analysis of various anti-spam solutions, thecompany decided to place Fortinet's FortiMail multi-layered email securityplatform in an extensive test scenario. H3G tested the capacity ofFortinet's security platform to deal with a large amount of emailscontaining complex malware to mirror the increased sophistication ofInternet threats. After four months of testing by H3G, FortiMail met allH3G Austria requirements, catching around 99% of spam and viruses accordingto H3G's tests.

"Not only is the volume of email traffic rising but with it, the complexityof malware with the presence of blended threats combining spam, viruses, worms and spyware. To help ensure optimum service and security for ourcustomers, we needed an effective multi-layered solution that combinedantivirus, anti-spam and anti-spyware technologies in one appliance," saidGünther Fischer, head of Product and Service Enabler for the IT & Networksbusiness unit at H3G Austria. "FortiMail met our performance requirementswhile providing ease-of-use and management to our IT team which isessential as we do not have the time or resources to deploy and maintainseparate point solutions."

In addition to providing high levels of security performance andmanageability, FortiMail was the only solution on the market that offered aper-system licensing model. This was a decisive factor for H3G Austria, which provides all its new customers with an email account and enjoys afast-growing number of mobile subscribers.

H3G Austria has deployed two FortiMail-2000A appliances in highavailability mode for antivirus and anti-spam protection as well as MMSscanning.
