Ericsson Collaborates With Intel to Bring HSPA Mobile Data Solutions to Intel's Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs)
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN -- (Marketwire) -- 10/19/08 -- Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC)announced today that it is collaborating withIntel to bring HSPA mobile data solutions to Mobile InternetDevices(MIDs). Ericsson is thereby extending its 3G mobile broadbandtechnology from notebooks to a range of pocketable devices withvarious purposes.
The Ericsson HSPA data solution is targeted at Intel's Moorestownplatform and is scheduled for release in the 2009/10 timeframe.Basedon the Intel® Atom(TM) processor, Moorestown is Intel'snext-generation MID platform which will include HSPA as one of itswireless technologies.
Pocketable MIDs can deliver a truly mobile internet experience, andare expected to facilitate a range of uses including entertainmentand media, connected GPS navigation, online gaming, socialnetworking, data communication, and productivity. With ubiquitousbroadband connectivity, mobile users will be able to enjoy theseexperiences any time, anywhere.
Johan Wibergh, Senior Vice President and head of Business UnitNetworks at Ericsson, says: "Ericsson continues to create oneInternet and one experience for the consumer, regardless oflocationor device, fixed or wireless. We see great potential in embeddingmobile broadband in MIDs, creating new markets in the industry.
We are very excited to work with Intel to bring together thetelecomand computing industries and extend the mobile broadbandecosystem."
"The Internet, with all of its richness, versatility andpersonalization, will forever change how we think about mobilecomputing," said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel Senior Vice PresidentandGeneral Manager for the company's Ultra Mobility Group. "The highperformance, low power and compatibility of Intel® architecture, coupled with Ericsson's 3G mobile technologies, represents one oftheways to accelerate the global adoption of a new breed of MobileInternet Devices that provide people with more powerful, alwaysconnected Internet-based experiences."
The 3G technology is built on Ericsson's latest generation of HSPAchipsets in small, thin modules, enabling MID manufacturers toproduce very attractive end-user devices. Ericsson is optimizingitsmodule for Intel's next-generation Moorestown platform andMoblin-based Linux operating systems. The module will work on bothWCDMA/HSPA and GSM/EDGE networks worldwide.
HSPA is the world's most widely deployed 3G mobile broadbandtechnology, with 221 commercially deployed networks availablearoundthe world serving more than 60 million subscribers -- a figurethat isincreasing by 4 million per month.

About Ericsson's HSPA solution
HSPA stands for High Speed Packet Access. An inherent advantage ofHSPA is that the technology is a natural extension of existingWCDMA/GSM networks, or about 85 percent of the world's existingwireless networks, and therefore has the potential to be readilyavailable to a large number of wireless users, creating a massmarketfor mobile broadband. By 2010, 71 percent of mobile broadbandconnections are projected to be HSPA-based. Ericsson's HSPA mobilebroadband solution is part of Ericsson's Full Service Broadbandoffering. The advanced technology lets operators more than doubletheir system capacity and cuts response times for interactiveservices. On average, users will be able to download 20 timesfasterthan with a GSM/GPRS connection. Future evolution steps willincreasethe HSPA download speed to 42Mbps and the upload speed to 12Mbps.Ericsson offers HSPA support on many frequency bands ranging from850MHz to 2.6GHz.
