OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/21/08 -- Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada and Patron of the Royal Canadian Legion, will receive the symbolic first poppy from Lieutenant General (Ret'd) Charles Belzile, the Honorary Grand President of the Legion, and Mr. Wilf Edmond, Dominion President. The ceremony, in advance of Remembrance Day, will take place on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at 2:30 p.m., at Rideau Hall.

Each year, about 18 million poppies are distributed in communities across Canada. Officially adopted by Canada in 1921 by the Great War Veterans Associations (the predecessor of the Royal Canadian Legion), poppies are recognized as the national symbol of remembrance of the 117,000 men and women who gave their lives during the two world wars, the Korean War, and other missions around the world.
