Through his biography, Marshall shares his unique perspective on a numberof important events of the war, as a sailor aboard a secret convoy to aid theBritish during a time the US was officially neutral. Marshall was also on thelast ship to leave Singapore before its fall to Japan.

Marshall's World War II career spanned the globe; the ships he served onbrought him around the world. His ship took part in the invasion of NorthAfrica. He also found himself in the Pacific, while his ship partook in theinvasion of Tarawa and Guam. One of the most interesting chapters in thememoir is the story of his ship's alcoholic captain and his actions during atyphoon.
