Traditional Hip Replacement Vs. the Direct Anterior Approach

Dr. Gannon will use the direct Anterior Approach to total hip replacementduring this procedure. The direct Anterior Approach is a tissue-sparingtechnique for total hip replacement that can help people who have sufferedfor decades from painful osteoarthritis in their hip. With the directAnterior Approach, surgeons approach the hip joint from the front asopposed to the side or back. The direct Anterior Approach allows surgeonsto work between the muscles without detaching them from the hip orthighbones.

"The advantages of the direct Anterior Approach are that it allows for asmaller incision and less tissue disruption, when compared to traditionaltotal hip replacement, which can shorten the recovery process.Additionally, patients may bend their hip and bear full weight sooner afterthis surgery than other types of hip replacement surgery," says Dr. Gannon.
