Attorney Says Media Frenzy Over Food Recalls Does Not Create Coverage
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Food contamination and productrecalls make for good headlines, but often result in headaches for thecompanies affected and their insurers, according to Jeffrey Weinstein, apartner with Mound, Cotton, Wollan & Greengrass of New York.
It is important to remember that the coverage offered under these policies"is limited to contamination of the insured's own product," Weinstein said.
"In a lot of these more media-driven frenzies that we have had," forexample the recent spinach recalls, pet food recall and others, "the companiesthat are associated with these products lose tremendous sums of money. Butsometimes, the company's product itself is not part of the contamination. Forinstance, with the pet food situation last year, people stopped serving storebought pet food to their pets, regardless of where that pet food came from, and that was a significant issue."
Weinstein is one of two dozen speakers who will gather in Philadelphia onDecember 8-9 to address the top risks facing the global insurance industry.Other speakers will address insurance risks posed by nanotechnology, thecapital markets crisis, lost enterprise value, mergers and acquisitions, andclimate change. Insurance regulation, commutations, and the right toassociate counsel in insurance and reinsurance also will be addressed.Speakers are from the nation's leading law firms, plus companies like Allianzof America Resolution Services, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, TheHartford, and Cavell USA.
The program -- "The Insurance Industry's Top 10 Risks & OpportunitiesConference" -- is being chaired by Jennifer Devery, partner-elect with CrowellMoring LLP of Washington, DC, and Lloyd Gura, also a partner with Mound Cottonin New York.
