ATLANTA, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Lancope(R), Inc., the provider of theStealthWatch(R) System, the Best in NetFlow Analysis(http://www.lancope.com/news/08052008.aspx) and the most widely used NetworkBehavior Analysis (NBA) and response solution, today announced that BinghamtonUniversity, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, is usingStealthWatch to help streamline network management, control and security withfast, accurate visibility of network behavior.

Ranked as "the premier public university in the Northeast by the FiskeGuide to Colleges 2009, Binghamton has an IT network that spans 20,000 clientendpoints and six geographic locations. After contending with worm propagationand other security threats that affected network performance, Binghamton'snetwork management team needed a solution that would increase visibility ofnetwork traffic and analyze network behavior for potential threats.

"We knew that the volume of new attacks and the vectors used were onlygoing to increase, so we chose to stay ahead of the curve with a behavioralanalysis system," said Jamie Arnold, senior network analyst for BinghamtonUniversity. "I believe behavior and anomaly-based solutions will be mosteffective long term. StealthWatch was the only solution we tested that doesnot rely on canned signature-matching techniques to identify risky networktraffic."

As the industry leading flow-based NBA solution, StealthWatch leveragesnetwork traffic data from network segments, log files and packet captures.Unlike other technologies, StealthWatch actually correlates security andoperational data from routers, switches, intrusion prevention systems andcomprehensive network access control (NAC) solutions like Bradford Networks'Campus Manager. The integration results in a holistic view of network andsecurity infrastructure for Binghamton's network management team.

StealthWatch and Campus Manager combine pre-connect assessment with post-connect monitoring to automate policy enforcement at Binghamton's networkedge. Now access control actions to prevent malicious or suspicious networkbehavior can take place at the offender's point of entry. Working in concert,StealthWatch and Campus Manager continuously assess hosts responsible fordisrupting network performance and quickly quarantine offenders before anyimpact to Binghamton's network availability.

Prior to StealthWatch, Arnold and his team had to collect network trafficdata from a variety of sources, and then try to identify trends and patterns.

"StealthWatch is now the single point of reference when we're trying toresolve security challenges or observe new trends that may cause performanceissues later on," said Arnold. "We can tailor the system reporting to includeas much or as little data as we choose. Furthermore, StealthWatch is anintegral part of the network access control."

"We are excited that Binghamton University chose StealthWatch to monitorand protect its extensive network," said Harland LaVigne, president and CEO ofLancope. "They join 60 other academic institutions across 25 countries inrecognizing StealthWatch network behavior analysis as an integral part of acomplete security and network management strategy. StealthWatch maximizesefficiency and minimizes risk by delivering detailed visibility for all teamswithin the IT organization."

Join Binghamton University, Lancope and Bradford Networks as they present"Network Behavior Monitoring & Control: A Case Study" on Thursday, November20, 2008. This webinar will demonstrate how the university uses NBA and NAC toenhance security, deliver policy enforcement and increase network visibility. For more information or to register, visithttp://www.lancope.com/news/webinars/.
