Session Description: The introduction of Virtual Tape Libraries (commonlyknown as VTLs) provided some initial relief to large enterprises for whomthe machinations of direct-to-tape backup had simply become unfeasible.But with massive amounts disk still required to cache backups of increasingmagnitude and tape as a final destination, VTLs left as many problemsunsolved as they addressed. Today, data deduplication, or "dedupe," iscausing a paradigm shift in the way enterprises of all sizes address dataprotection, with a promise of "use less disk, yet store more data."
