New digital media processor from Texas Instruments provides H.264 at D1 resolution for professional quality video on low-cost consumer video products
HOUSTON, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI)(NYSE: TXN) today announced its newest digital media processor based onDaVinci(TM) technology, the TMS320DM357. The DM357 is a low-cost,ARM(R)-based processor that includes a royalty-free H.264 codec at D1resolution for video compression, as well as MPEG-4, JPEG and G.711 codecsthat do not require licensing fees or royalties to TI, and an integratedEthernet Media Access Controller (EMAC) to help developers reduce their billof material (BOM) costs. This allows original equipment manufacturers (OEM)to offer price-optimized, advanced digital video end equipments with clearsound and picture such as digital photo frames, IP network cameras andlow-cost digital video recorders. "Now integrated with H.264, embedded EMAC, DDR2 and other systemperipherals, the DM357 is yet another offering from TI that allows developersto add functionality and value to their digital video solutions at minimalcost," said Jacob Alamat, product marketing manager for digital mediaprocessors, Texas Instruments. "The DM357 builds on the existing DaVincitechnology software framework, which allows customers to quickly develop ascalable product line on TI's digital media processors."
Additionally, developers can re-use intellectual property from the robustDaVinci technology portfolio (http://www.thedavincieffect.com/) or leverage IPfrom the vast open-source resources for ARM-based processing to speed themthrough the development process.
Advanced video performance
The DM357 processor achieves its impressive performance by integratingH.264 at D1 resolution and MPEG-4 encoding and decoding at 30fps per channel,as well as JPEG encoding and decoding at 50 MPixels per second. Theintegrated H.264 allows for increased compression for greater storage andstreaming capability.
The DM357 also includes a carefully selected suite of peripherals, such ashigh speed USB 2.0 On-The-Go and DDR2. The integrated EMAC, three videodigital-to-analog converters, a host port interface and even more systemintegration save developers more than US$4 in BOM, as well as the associatedmanufacturing and design costs compared to the use of discrete parts. Pricedat just over US$21 in 100 unit volume, the DM357 processor is an even greatervalue because it includes the integrated, production-quality H.264 in D1resolution, MPEG-4, JPEG and G.711 codecs without the need to pay licensingfees or royalties to TI with acceptance of a click-wrap legal agreement.
Complete hardware, software and tools solution
The DM357 processor and DVEVM take advantage of all the tools and supportincluded in the DaVinci technology portfolio to help OEMs save months of time. The application programming interfaces (APIs) common across DaVinci offeringsalso means that developers familiar with DaVinci technology or ARM developmentcan quickly begin creation of their products with virtually no learning curve.
When coupled with the DVEVM, developers are able to get startedimmediately with product development. The DVEVM helps them achieve thefastest possible time to market, with optimized MontaVista Linux, an ubootloader and drivers for the complete peripheral set. Rounding out the DVEVM arethe H.264, JPEG, MPEG-4 SP and G.711 codecs, plus Video Input/Output, AudioIn/Out, an external EMAC, USB 2.0 On-The-Go and JTAG for test.
Pricing and availability
The TMS320DM357ZWT processor is now open for order entry from TI and TIauthorized distributors. It is priced at US$21.22 in 100 unit volume. Thehighly integrated device is packaged in a 16 x 16, 0.8 mm pitch ball gridarray package. The TMDSEVM357 Digital Video Evaluation Module is also now openfor order entry at a cost of US$895. Codecs will be available for download inmid-December. For more information please visit http://www.ti.com/dm357pr.
