WHAT:

48-year old NJ father, former body builder and ex-salesman prepares in hyperbaric tank for complex reconstructive surgery to rebuild lip and reconstruct thumbs.

Two-Time Cancer Survivor's Tale of Thanksgiving:

  • Contracted Hodgkin's disease and had spleen removed as young child
  • Treated for mouth cancer as an adult
  • Developed Overwhelming Post-Splenectomy Septic Syndrome ("OPSS") last year, an acute infection and side effect of spleen removal
  • 24 hours later lost legs, arms and lower lip
  • Arms and hands were rebuilt by NJ medical team using excess chest and belly tissue

WHY:

Dr. Andrew Elkwood, M.D., a world renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, along with a NJ medical team will rebuild the 48-year old patient's lower lip to restore normal speech capabilities. They will also reconstruct the patient's thumbs using remnants of bone and skin from his chest and groin areas. The patient will be placed in a hyperbaric chamber before and after the procedure to prevent the risk of post-surgery limb loss, common among those who have undergone radiation treatment.

WHERE:

Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune

HOW:

*Interviews with Dr. Elkwood and patient are available before and after surgery.*
