BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/24/08 -- OR-Live, the surgical broadcasting company, announces the availability of an on-demand surgical broadcast from Brighamand Women's Hospital utilizing a novel, personalized knee implant. The newprosthetic, the ConforMIS iDuo™, is a bicompartmental resurfacing implantdesigned for patients whose arthritic damage is limited to either themedial or lateral compartments of the knee, in addition to thepatellofemoral compartment. The implant resurfaces only the affected areas, offering a minimally invasive, bone preserving option for younger patientsthat does not compromise their ability to move to a traditional total kneereplacement in the future. The procedure also preserves the anterior andposterior cruciate ligaments, which help to maintain knee kinematics.

Dr. Tom Minas, Director of the Cartilage Repair Center at Brigham andWomen's Hospital, and Dr. Wolfgang Fitz, Associate Orthopaedic Surgeon atBrigham and Women's Hospital performed the surgery. The webcast ismoderated by Dr. Thomas Thornhill, MD, Chief of Orthopaedics at Brigham andWomen's.

The implant is created through an advanced image-to-implant process thatutilizes CT scans from a patient to create a virtual model of a patient'sknee. The implant, as well as the cutting and placement guides used for thesurgery, are custom designed and manufactured to match each patient's kneeanatomy.

To assure precise implantation, the surgeons will utilize patient-specificinstruments designed from the same scans as the implant, including data onthe patient's biomechanical axis. The patient-specific cutting andplacement guides reduce the number of steps during surgery and provideprecise guidance to accurately place the instruments, simplifying thesurgical technique. This personalized approach eliminates many of the bonecuts required in traditional surgery, helping to reduce surgical andrecovery times. More than 80 patient-specific, partial knee resurfacingprocedures have been performed worldwide.

Though originally aired on October 9, 2008, viewers will have theopportunity to email questions to the surgeons that performed thisprocedure.
