New ERP System for Aviation Maintenance Goes Live at Japan Airlines

Implementation of the World's Largest SAP(R) ERP System for Increased Air Safety and Productivity

ARMONK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 12/01/08 -- Japan Airlines International (Shinagawa, TYO:JAL) officially launched "JAL Mighty," a new enterprise resource planning(ERP) system for aviation maintenance, this November. IBM Japan (NYSE: IBM), IBM Business Consulting Services (Chiyoda, TYO: IBCS), and SAP JapanCo., Ltd (Chiyoda, TYO: SAP Japan) collaborated on the project to create asystem to manage maintenance planning, quality control and parts inventoryfor approximately 160 aircraft, 460 engines, and 500,000 parts. Alsoequipped with 19 standard SAP modules to serve approximately 6,000 usersincluding aircraft mechanics, the system is the largest ERP system foraviation maintenance in the world.

The new SAP ERP system integrates approximately 100 business systems formaintenance planning, quality control and parts inventory for aircraft, aswell as qualification management of aircraft mechanics into one SAP ERPpackage to realize business processes standardization and real-timeinformation sharing. As a result, operational complexity due to multiplemaintenance systems and separate data management is reduced, and managementprocesses of maintenance planning, quality control of aircraft partsinventory are streamlined while improving safety in the air.

SAP ERP for aviation maintenance is implemented at 17 airlines in the worldincluding JAL. For the JAL's world's largest scale system implementationproject to date, IBM consultants from 10 countries such as UK, France, andSouth Africa were brought together to leverage their past experiences inaviation maintenance system implementation at other airlines, andcontribute their global insight. In order to minimize technical risks andto prevent issues, this project also adopted SAP MaxAttention(TM), theultimate implementation support service provided by SAP, which was createdby a global team of experts including during the design phase developersfrom SAP's headquarters in Germany.

During the JAL project, IBCS provided consulting services for businessprocess standardization and operational transformation to supportadjustment to the new ERP package system, while collaborating with JAL andIBM Japan in system development. Part of program development was donejointly by IBM India and IBM Japan development centers.
